Obsessions come in different shapes and sizes. They sometimes appear as deep addictions, but sometimes they don't even strike as important because they seem mere whims.
In nowadays' society, one ruled by the need of communication and of a constant socialising mood, the Facebook addiction has become of such a depth that it might soon require a proper medication.
*Twitter has 175 million users. There are 95 million tweets twitted per day. Almost 4 million per hour.*LinkedIn has more than 100 million registered users.*There are aproximately 640 million Facebook users.*Half the users are online on Facebook everyday, which means there are aprox. 300 million active users daily.*200 million users surf Facebook from their phone. They are twice as active as regular users.*Users post around 30 billion articles on their walls everyday.*On average, an user posts 90 articles per month.
My newsfeed doesn't sum up to only 90 articles per month. I post my ideas, quotes I find during my daily readings, photos I take and are either funny or worth sharing, songs that I love and so on. I spend almost 5 hours on Facebook on a dialy basis and since my smartphone is on its way to my greedy little fashionable hands, I will probably double that time.
Reading "The Book of Faces" by Alexandru-Bradut Ulmanu, I have come to realise that it is not only me who has this foolish obsession, but most of my generation. Heading out for a night on the town with your soulmate is no longer enough if not marked in the ephemeral eternity of a FB check-in. Time consumption has been given a new meaning : you no longer have time for that dreaded life-changing essay because you spent your valuable time resources last night, during a not so life-changing conversation with the cute guy that liked your very meaningful "Heading out for a shopping session with the girls" status.
The book does also emphasize the importance Facebook has in a world where distance does not any longer prove to be an obstacle, but it's creating a distance between real people, which is certainly becoming an obstacle in the path to spiritual evolution.
All in all, giving up Facebook is like going into rehab. Which is commiting social suicide.
